Apples & Oranges brings together artists engaging in experimental publishing and tests the extremities of those terms. Combining a curated fair section with a lively public programme of performances, interventions and talks, the event presents a variety of material, digital, and performative approaches to artists’ publications.

The title of the event refers, on the one hand, to the famous fruit salad diagram by Clive Philpott, on the other hand, it highlights the diversity and often incompatibility of different practices that come under the umbrella term of ‘publishing’. By reaching across disciplinary boundaries and engaging with formats, and genres on the fringe —self-publishing, collective writing and reading, fan-fiction, zines, book-objects…— Apples and Oranges creates a platform for debate on what publishing as an artistic practice may mean today.

One of the most interesting things about artists’ publishing, and self-publishing in particular, is that it is often an engine for collaboration, leading to development of intricate systems of networks and ‘scenes’. As the only artist book fair in the region, Apples & Oranges creates a platform where artists can present and sell their work; but it is as much a commercial opportunity, as it is an occasion to network, experiment, and foster new connections.
