What inspires someone to retreat into a monastic community and to live according to strict order rules? This exhibition takes you into the world of monks, recluses, and hermits, and explores the meaning of seclusion in religious life. You follow the devout in their search for spiritual liberation. The visual focus on the image plays a predominant role in this quest.
(Un)worldly reveals art treasures from Flemish churches, monasteries, and abbeys that have never been shown before, and places them next to new and existing work of Mario De Brabandere, Marlene Dumas, Ann Veronica Janssens, and Gustave Van de Woestyne. Both ancient and contemporary art respond to human concerns of all times, searching for answers to existential questions that are as meaningful today as they were centuries ago.
