info

Duncan Speakman is a director of the artist collective ‘circumstance’. Circumstance create cinematic experiences in unexpected locations. These experiences take many forms, from mass participation performances and intimate in-ear stories, to books, installations and workshops. They take melancholy and romance and wrap it up in the politics of mobile technology and public space. http://productofcircumstance.com

Duncan originally trained as a sound engineer at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Since 2001 he has been developing artworks and performances that use, abuse and question digital communication systems. Early installation works have been presented at ISEA, Navigate Live, Sonic Acts, InBetweenTime and ArteMov. Since 2005 he has focused on mobile audio works and locative media, and more recently has been continually developing pieces where the line between audience and performer becomes continually questioned, most notably the ’subtlemob’ form, of which a number of works continue to tour internationally. From 2007 − 2010 he was a senior lecturer in Media Practice at the University of the West of England and from 2011-2012 he has been associate artist at Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge.
