Nul Punt Wolk is a collaborative project developed by berte & harmey, an occasional artist duo, formed by Filip Berte (BE) and Cliona Harmey (IE). Ghent is used as the starting point for the development of the first version of their Bare Map series. The Bare Map was generated using aerial LiDAR data to create visualisations of a city stripped bare to its underlying terrain, devoid of buildings, vegetation and streets.

The physical imprint of the map was made in collaboration with riso-print lab Topo Copy (BE). These prints were presented on a custom modular support system built in collaboration with Open Structures (BE). The Bare Map was installed sculpturally in real life at BLANCO and was also visible via an online preview. The Bare Map Prototyping Preview was made possible with funding from Culture Ireland.

Nul Punt Wolk will grow cumulatively and is designed to be activated at different locations. A Dublin map is the next step in the Nul Punt Wolk project, starting in June 2021 with an Open Studio Research Residency at NCAD Gallery. The Dublin Bare Map is funded by an Irish Arts Council Project Grant.

BIO
berte & harmey was formed by Filip Berte (BE) and Cliona Harmey (IE), to share research and resources to explore ideas around spatial politics, critical geography, historical legacies and socio-technical systems of exclusion and inclusion. Of particular interest to both artists are ideas around visibility/invisibility, occlusion and machine vision.
In Winter 2019 both artists participated in an invited experimental Prototyping Residency at Timelab Ghent which was designed to encourage co-creation, commoning and circular economy. The residency was the start of their ongoing collaboration.
During the first European lockdown (March 2020) they worked together remotely using teleconferencing to create the workflow and first prototype versions for their new mapping project Nul Punt Wolk. During this time they also discussed and refined a methodology for activation of their maps which are designed to act as tools for an enhanced observation and re-envisioning of local habitats. berte & harmey now further consolidate and extend their collaborative practice through prototyping and presentation.
